Hyundai develops biometric system to unlock and start a car

This seems to be a major anti-theft technology breakthrough.

New Delhi: Hyundai Motor Corp has developed a biometric system for cars that will help the drivers to unlock and start engine with a light touch.

The company confirmed that the system will be first installed in the 2019 Santa Fe SUV which will be launched worldwide in the first quarter of the next year.

authentication technology, the drivers simply have to verify their fingerprint information against a pre-registered biometric data on a sensor placed next to the door handle of the car, the South Korean automaker said in a statement.

In addition, the fingerprint recognition system also includes an engine start button that permits only authorised drivers to start the car, thus it can avoid vehicle theft. Beyond this, the registered users fingerprint data will be encrypted to provide customization of the car settings.

This unit can register multiple fingerprints in a single car. The car starts working based on the customised setting of an individual driver.

Hyundai has claimed that this unit is first of its kind as it incorporates both technologies of unlocking and starting the car engine in a single system.
