World’s eighth largest carmaker, Kia Motors aims to be among top 5 carmakers in the India with 6-7 percent market share in its three years of operations.

New Delhi: South Korean car manufacturer, Kia Motors aims to become the segment leader in the compact utility vehicle space with the SP2 concept which will be launched in mid-2019, a senior executive told ETAuto. Moreover, the company is also considering to bring one more SUV and MPV in the Indian car market.

Manohar Bhat, Head Sales & Marketing at Kia Motors India said, “With SP2 concept our aim is to be the market leader in the compact utility vehicle segment. SP2 concept SUV will be in Rs 10 lakh-Rs 16 lakh category”.

Currently, this category is dominated by Hyundai Creta which sells around 8000-9000 units a month. Apart from Hyundai Creta, the category also have UVs like Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.

Bhat also added, “We saw a scope to enter the SUV segment which is the fastest growing segment. We can have one or two products in this space. MPV segment is also interesting today, so is the hatch and sedan. The management is yet to make the final decision what will be the final product portfolio.”

To achieve this ambitious target it plans to launch one new model every six months from mid-2019 and plans to have the widest network that any new entrant had till now.

“We will have the widest and deepest network that any new entrant ever had. We will be very near to the customers. Our service facility and price would be really very good. Kia is a reliable brand and customers would not have thought much about it before buying it.” said Manhor Bhat. However, he declined to divulge any specific details on this.

As of now, the company has invested $1.1 billion to set-up a plant in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh with the capacity of 300,000 cars per annum. The plant will be operational from early next year to do the trial production but commercially it will start mid next year before Diwali. The plant will employ 3000 people when fully operational.
